A recent large scale commission for a friend/artist I greatly admire who requested my interpretation of mental trauma.
It wasn't an easy thing to think about, but better than the alternative which was fulfillment in a relationship. Look I know how important it is to stretch one's boundaries but for now let me work with something I know about. After doing a fair bit of brainstorming, I worked out that one of the best metaphorical images for trauma is a wounded cocoon. The top here is the dessicated one, the older with blood at its edges and faint bruises. In the middle is the young one, fetal, scared, cut and bruised. The bottom, in the same yellow as the husk at the top, has broken wings for eyes. The leaf holds on but how long until it lets go?
